Autumn Term in Year 6

The inspirational texts on our bookshelf will inspire our learning across the curriculum.

During Autumn term in Year 6, we will read a variety of inspirational texts where we will explore the character traits of kindness, citizenship, integrity, curiosity, bravery and gratitude.

In our first text, we will explore The Lost Thing. We will discuss how the characters in this book do, or do not, show kindness as well as thinking about how the main character demonstrates integrity. When reading Black and British, we will focus on the history of Britain and what it means to be a British and a global citizen. This text will also evoke children’s curiosity as they will learn many hidden truths about Britain’s history. In The Undefeated, we will be introduced to famous figures that have consistently demonstrated bravery and will explore how we can demonstrate this character trait ourselves.

We will take a journey to Verona where we will meet The Capulet and The Montague families in the story of Romeo and Juliet. We will discuss and debate the rivalry between these two families and whether or not they show integrity and kindness. Way Home is an intriguing picture book with fascinating pictures. Whilst sharing this text, we will encourage children to continue to be curious and to be brave, even when facing challenges. Throughout all these texts, the children we be encouraged to reflect on their own lives and how we can express gratitude for the lives they lead.

We will recap and develop use of descriptive vocabulary to write interesting stories based on The Lost Thing. We will also use our bookshelf texts to write some non-fiction pieces such as a non-chronological report and a balanced argument and we will create some of our own poetry! Our science topics are Living Things and Their Habitats and Electricity! In History and Geography, using our bookshelf text of Black and British as inspiration, we will be learning about West African and Caribbean Heritage and thinking about how this has influenced settlement and tourism. To top it all off we will celebrate Black History Month and Rosh Hashanah, as well as giving a Christmas performance!

Important information:

  • Children will come into school on their PE kit on their PE days.
  • Please make sure your child’s book bag containing their reading books and reading record is brought into school every day.
  • Reading books will be changed as the children finish their book.
  • In UKS2, we encourage children to read independently at home and sign their own reading record. Parents and carers can then monitor this weekly to ensure children are reading as much as possible. You know your child best and if you would like to sign their reading record, please do this.
  • Home Learning will include daily reading, weekly spellings, and a maths or SPAG task each week.
  • Your child’s class teacher will be available every day before and after school to receive messages, celebrate successes and discuss answer any questions.
